Watching foreign films is a popular activity around the world. While most viewers enjoy the high quality of the movie, more and more are watching to improve their listening and reading skills in English as a Second Language. Usually, the film is subtitled in the local language but now DVD rentals have multiple tracks of subtitles in various languages including English. Select the English subtitle and follow along. If there is something you don’t understand then simply stop the DVD and back it up a minute. Watch it again then if you don’t understand it, get out your dictionary and look up the word. Using this approach to watching English language films will rapidly grow your listening and reading skills. This is a great technique for preparing for the TOEFL test or any of the standardized tests of English as a Second Language.
