Text messaging acronyms are the new short hand of the twenty first century. Students of English as a Second Language all over the world will often know what LOL stands for in their native tongue but will not be able to tell the ESL teacher what the acronym actually stands for Laugh Out Loud. As much as most schools or EFL books don’t teach things like this, it is important to expose the students to them. Often, it is these subject areas from the global youth culture that really interest and motivate the ESL student to learn the not so interesting areas of grammar for example. When those learning English see or hear these acronyms on music television channels or pop culture television programs, they feel like they are part of the “in” group and work that much harder to learn English as a Second language.
